I often think that this part of the country is under appreciated in comparison to the likes of our beach resorts. If you are into experience the authentic Mexican culture, a good place to start are these places. Allow 2-3 days in each city.
If you have seen the movie Coco, you will feel very familiar being here. Traditional and well conserved Mexican town. It is 5 hours by car from Mexico City.
Stay at Hotel Rosewood (great roof terrace), Posada de la Aldea or Hotel la Matilda.
Eat at El Atrio and visit Fabrica la Aurora.
Did you know we have two wine areas in the country? The more well known is the Guadalupe region in Baja California, the second place is in central Mexico in the Queretaro, Guanajuato states. A must visit for wine lovers.

Home of our most emblematic food, music and drinks, the pacific coast also brings amazing weather all year around, golden beaches and a more relaxed Mexican atmosphere than the Riviera Maya.
Our suggestion is to spend about a week or more. You will need to fly from Mexico city.
Food Capital of Mexico. Home of mezcal, mole, tamales, tlayudas and Guelaguetza Festival that runs in July. If you happen to be here, please try Criollo restaurant and get yourself an Alebrije.
From here you can go by car to Puerto Escondido.
A hippie town for surfers. Stay outside the town to have a more relaxing experience, try to surf and eat all you can.
Places to stay: Hotel Escondido, Casa Malandra (ideal for maybe two families who want to share a place), Hotel Terrestre. There is an Omakase restaurant in the area not to be missed! Just be aware that these places are remote, perhaps 30-40 minutes by car from the airport.
Perfect spot for those who want to relax and unwind.
I find it more more family oriented. Ocean is beautiful and calm. There are not many resorts in this area which makes it more unique.
Think of Tequila, Mariachis and tropical beach combined. A bigger city than the places in Oaxaca which translates into more options for accommodation and more activities. Everything is very close.
Our best known resorts and beaches are in this area. With turquoise water, white sand beaches and Mayan pyramids, the opportunities to have an amazing time are endless. You need to fly from Mexico city to this area.
It is truly a gem. A delightful blend of provincial and cosmopolitan, it is a town steeped in colonial history. Even though it is not on the coast, you can easily reach the beach in 20-30 minutes and can continue a longer journey to the Riviera Maya.
Eat at Chaya Maya or Museo Gastronomico for authentic Yucatan dishes.

Playa del Carmen is a good spot to use as a base to explore. There are many natural reserves, island visits, Mayan sites, Cenotes, parks (Xcaret / Xelha) and turquoise beaches.
Tulum has the best beach in Mexico. We do not need to say more.
Bacalar is a hidden amazing spot.
